Yes, I will every now and again buy bear rooted trees. I'm learning from seed and bare roots. Some have flowered bared fruits within 18 mths to 2 years, some 4 real love the fruit, the best I've had in a long time. I love grafted better. Bathe way I love your show.😁
At least in my area, the steps for growing black berries in a container are:
1. Put grocery store, impulse-buy black berry cutting in decent sized container in sun
2. Care for sporadically
3. Wait 2 years….then harvest yearly black berries, and tons more black berry plants from cuttings that root pretty well in just water
Good information and a strong case for container growing. Another upside would be if you don't have an in-ground space ready for a tree you intend to plant. You can give the tree more roots and make it stronger by putting it in a large container until the site is ready instead of leaving it in the nursery pot. Even a few months would make a difference.
I have to say I just love how you refer to 'Mr. Leon'. It's familiar yet respectful. I wish we had more of those sort of manners up north.
Great point.
In fact, that's what I'm doing now.
The trees in the red tubs in this video will probably be in the ground next year.
I just don't know where I want to put them yet.
I am about to put about 25 fig trees into very large containers. I would not be able to handle that many in the ground. However, it is a different story in containers.
Now I get to enjoy all the different flavors and have an extended harvest from early, mid, and late season fog types.
Sounds great!
Figs are so easy to grow and produce so well.
Figs look great! If you're not a member of ourfigs.com you should be! They have forums on figs, trading and other trees / bushes. Lots of knowledgeable people, both local and world wide and it's free.
I'm not a member, but I have visited their site several times.
Thanks for the reminder :)
@@BIGALTX TP2, Highly suggest you protect those pots from the heavy rains we're about to get in next few days, as many of your figs will likely burst or spoil. ourfigs site has lots of ideas; many members have hundreds of figs in pots. I use garbage bags wrapped around trunks and clipped to sides of pot to prevent most water and let it run off. Potted figs much more prone to burst and/or spoil than in-ground. Those are beautiful figs and would hate to see them ruined. Your striped fig reportedly spoils more easily. Good luck, My Friend and I hope all remains well.
Beautiful trees
We need to keep growing food of all source.
Yes we do! Thanks for your comment. 👍
BEAUTIFUL BROTHER. GOD BLESS YOU FOR HELPING THIS DUMMY.
Glad to help a fellow dummy 😎👍
Man i wish the ranchers would use them tubs around here ! TY
I bet they do!
Ask a local feed store for some contacts.

I saw video on wicking in the ground u dig a hole 4 foot deep in bottles put a pile cover the ends some air and water stay out put rocks bottom dirt potter soil fertilizer line fill it up and water it
Interesting…
Looking forward to see how the wicking buckets and plants make it through a freeze out in the field. If they do well I am converting my garden over here south of Fort Worth.
I don't think it's going to be a problem.
I'm going to do a video on "overwintering containers" in a few weeks.
Watch for it
As we get older (speaking for myself) your math makes good sense! Even if the nursery replaces the tree, if it die. You have lost a year. Enjoy your channel.
Absolutely. Thanks for the confirmation.
Yea they work well i have a container fig as well🌞
Figs seem to LOVE containers!
Went by Bob Wells yesterday in Lindale and they had all their fruit trees that are on clearance for $5 a 3 gallon tub. Got figs, plums, peaches and pears.
Would love to come out to see how you train your fig trees.
That is awesome!
And CHEAP.
Love the content TP2!
Thanks, Wade!
Air layers now... they'll be ready in fall to pot up.
You bet. That’s a great idea! Thanks for sharing 😊
What is the point of the PVC watering tubes if you're going to drip irrigate, or vice versa?
As a general rule, watering is done through the fill tube.
I did the irrigation for my own convenience.
However, when using water soluble fertilizer, I add the fert to the tube and add water. Makes it very easy.
YOU ALL VERY SMART MAN
Thanks so much!
Love Mr Leon! He’s such a jewel. Are your lemon trees dwarf? I’m considering some dwarf fruit trees here in East Texas. In containers. I have limited space and crappy ground
It's not a lemon, it's a Satsuma Orange. I think it's a dwarf but don't remember for sure.
Your fig trees look fantastic. May I ask, what are the dimensions of the tubs you have these growing in, i.e. how deep and wide are they? Also, did you notice any difference in the performance of the trees between using the pipe with the fabric method, as opposed to the pipe with the sock method for the wicking tubs?
The tubs are around 20" high and 20" in diameter as I recall. They should be around 18 to 20 gallons.
I don't think there is any difference between the "Leon" (original) style tubs and my "hybrid" tubs as far as performance.
But, I like the hybrid ones better. I think they're easier to make and probably cost less
Hope that helps.
Did you do a soil test before you planted. I can’t seem to get rid of the blossom end rot. I’ve used calcium nitrate
I had a LOT of BER on my tomatoes this year too.
Not sure what the problem was.
Here's a blog post I wrote on blossom end rot:

How are figs doing after 3 years? I have several that keep freezing off each winter. I'm thinking of planting in the containers and move them into a shed for the winter. I live in west Texas south of Amarillo.
Actually, I put these in the ground a year or so after I made this video. They are doing pretty good in the ground, but I think they would have done well in containers too. So really it’s your choice.
Would really like to know more about how long it takes and what they need from cuttings.what are the feeding and soil dampness requirements .what type of fertilizers and how often.
These are win Wicking Tubs. The soil moisture should stay fairly constant.
I like 10-20-10 granular fertilizer in the spring.
I use 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer during the growing year.
You can find that here: bit.ly/homesteadadvisor
Would love to do this but I'm in zone 5, would that work here? Would they need winter protection?
Talk to your local nursery folks.
If THEY leave their plants and trees exposed to the elements through the winter, you should be able to also. And.. Your trees will probably be in larger containers than the ones in your local nursery. A larger container should offer even more insulation on the roots.
Now... if your local nursery has to "protect" their stock during the winter, you might have to do that too.
It’s hard to find containers that will last in the sun. I use 50 gal containers to to test out. Where did you buy your containers? Thanks.

What is your soil mixture? Happy gardening 🌱 Keep plowing
Any good Potting MIX will do.
Not potting "soil"... use potting MIX
Like these: amzn.to/2HQbIgn
Anyone know if I can container Blackberry plants in the north east.? Wondering what to do with pot in the winter, mulch it?
I addressed that on another comment, so I'll just copy and paste that answer:

@@BIGALTX Thank you sir! Love your channel and content!
Thanks for the kind words :)
Bob wells nursery have some really good bare root tree’s. There bare roots are 2-3 years old.
Yep... they ship bare root, but if you go in person, they are in pots
From all these figs that you have in the container , which would you say is your favorite ( taste , production, disease resistance ) ? Wanting to do some in containers but will probably only start with a couple from Bob wells. What’s your code again ?
The code is TP2
I really don’t have a preference as far as taste. The brown turkey and the Celeste are really good figs for the area I’m in. Zone 8B.
@@BIGALTX same area as me. I’m in lindale area. Thank you!
Alan, very nice tutorial on the trees. As I live in south Louisiana, we have a lot of problems with fire ants. Do you have any issues with them in your area with the tubs?
Of course I have fireants, but haven't noticed any IN the tubs.
Here's the absolute best thing I've found for fireants.
I don't have any in my yard now, but my pastures still have a lot of mounds.
This stuff works like a charm. One jug will do an acre or two:
amzn.to/3hnqebO
@@BIGALTX Thanks for that information. I have been using Triazicide by Spectracide for a long time. Most of the granular stuff, just makes them get up and move, that I why I went to the liquid and soaked the mound. It does a good job killing them all. Down here not too many use the tubs like you use, so I am cutting plastic 55 gallon drums in half and applying the same practice and seem to be working great this past spring. I will being using some for the blackberries when they come available next spring.
What do you use as fertilizer..and how often
I planted them in the ground in 2020, but before I did, I fertilized them pretty much like my blackberries:
ruclips.net/video/9wZc3BFzQkA/видео.html
Got me to thinking. I have blackberries and figs in my garden along a back fence. Maybe I need to look at transitioning them to wicking tubs.'
I love the containers!!
I have the same tubs but they are not wicking. I'm having problems with over watering I believe. I've killed to many fruit trees this year. I mixed my own soil with fine pine bark, peat moss and chunky perlite. 1 part each. What is your soil made out of and do you have any issues with root rot or over watering? Thank you sir.
You may not have enough peat %
For a "wicking tub" there needs to be over 60% peat.
Not sure what the percentage would be if not a WT
Also, make sure the drain holes aren't stopped up
Where do you purchase your fig trees from. I’m in Texas looking for a good nursery.

How long can I keep dwarf fruit trees in these wicking tubs?
I really don't know. Probably depends on the variety.
Lots of folks raise figs in containers for years.
Some other varieties might not do as well as figs
I had a fig tree in austin. It was planted in the ground, and we had tons of figs every year. Why do you want to keep yours in a pot?
This was an experiment for me.
You'll find LOTS of folks growing them in pots.
It's a big trend.
However, I planted all these trees in the ground last fall.
If I hadn't, the big TX freeze would probably have killed them.
What is your soil mix to plant the fruit in the container?
It's called "3B" made by a company named Berger.
But, any potting "MIX" that is mostly peat should work.
Peat is what helps wick the water up.
Don't just use garden soil. It won't "wick"
@TexasPrepper2 thank you so much for the infos
Hello. I have fig trees and they do not look like yours . i just want to know the name of the fertilizer you use and how often feed your fig trees. Thanks
Most of the year I used 20-20-20 water soluble from HOSS Tools every 10 days or so:
ruclips.net/video/id59lOKog0A/видео.html
(in this video I'm using some old Miracle Grow that I needed to get rid of)
I've just ran out of the HOSS fertilizer, so I'm going to use what I have on hand, which is 13-13-13 granular.
It's getting a little late in the growing season, so I'll only fertilize once or twice more before winter.
Are your trees in containers?
U can try it to c what it turns into I hear it grow faster
Probably true :)
What if you can’t find what you are looking for in a container and bareroot is your only choice?
Then sure, buy the bare root.
In fact, I'm getting some bare root berries soon because there aren't any pots (new variety)
Hey man, I follow u from the very south of South America, from Argentina, and I'm very interested in Self Watering Wicking Tubs, and I wonder if ur drip irrigation is just to fill your wicking reservoir, or if it is because you needed more water than the one that comes up from ths reservoir?
Sometimes I water through the tube (especially if I'm adding a spoonful of fertilizer) but most times I just water with the drip.
It's not that I need "more" water. When I use the drip irrigation, I'm just filling the reservoir from the top instead of the fill tube. Saves me time. I can just turn it on and walk away. I have a timer on it.
... And... Greetings from Texas!
@@BIGALTX I miss Texas, I've been there several times, close to Dallas, don't know if I'm gonna fly Texas one more time
Hey Allen, How do think grapes would grow in a wicking tub? Any suggestions on varieties?
Hey man, You're getting way ahead of me 😀
I think I'll be putting grapes in a couple of EarthBoxes this fall.
I'll use EBs because I think they'll last longer than these tubs, but I don't see any reason that grapes wouldn't do well in containers.
Watch for the video later this fall :)
Not sure about good varieties. As for me, I'll just use what I've propagated.
Ask a nursery near you for varieties that will do well there.
@@BIGALTX I don't have any to propagate but I may order a couple of Muscadines from BobWells (Black Beauty and Victoria Red) When do you think is a good time to do this? Octorber - November?
If you're in the south I would plant in November/December
If you're in the north you probably need to plant in the spring, but I'm not familiar enough with northern climate to tell you what month
@@BIGALTX Ok, that sounds good. Also, I have been told when I plant grapes that I need to include "Mycorrhizal Fungi" on the roots. Supposedly, this will make them "Superman" Grapes. I'm guessing it's some kind of root hormone.
I think it's just a fungus (beneficial fungus) that aids in nutrient uptake
Where do you get your pots from?
This video explains it: ruclips.net/video/SlAOl995SaQ/видео.html
Well, you have solidified my decision in purchasing from Bob Wells nursery. I have a few figs in my cart currently. Can you at this point recommend your favorite fig trees that are prolific in nature. I can only afford about two or three at this point, and want to get the best bang for my investment. Thank you for this great content ‼️
These container trees are new so I don't know much about them yet.
I have a Celeste and a Brown Turkey in the ground that have been very productive over the years.
Ask Ed at Bob Wells for a recommendation, and make sure you mention me to get your 10% off.
The discount code is "TP2"
@@BIGALTX Thank You☺️
How often are you fertilizing? 1 tbsp/gallon once a month?
I'm fertilizing every 10 days right now with 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer.
I'm using the fertilizer injector most of the time.
When I use the injector, I use about 1 1/2 pounds for all 20 tubs.
But if I do it by hand, I put about 1 to 2 TBS per tub.
Hope that helps,
alan
@@BIGALTX Thanks for sharing, appreciate it! Was just curious how it differed from Leon's videos I've seen where he recommends 1tsp/gallon every time you water.
Great videos!
Would these trees grow nicely in Arizona?
Im using them in courtyard containers in Albuquerque nm
I really can't give advise about AZ... but go talk to your local nursery folks.
They will know what would do well in your area (in the ground and in containers)
Hope that helps,
alan
Why didn't you use drilled pvc pipe irrigation like you did before, instead of buying a drip irrigation system?
These emitters have so much more control than holes in PVC.
They are set at a specific GPM (gallon per minute) so I know if I leave it on an hour, I'm giving them 1 gal. Holes in PVC might not have the same consistency and might give more or less water.
Plus, this black pipe is so easy to work with... and is cheap
Are you planning on putting these in the ground or staying in containers?
All these went in the ground and are doing well
I think figs would do well in containers indefinitely
It depends on the Zone not Pot ...
👍😎
Not really seeing any info supporting the title. Should be "tour of my figs with some thoughts about buying stock".
OK
What you are buying is time.
Yeah... I guess so. 👍😎
It's better to wait 4 years than to sit without forever because you couldn't afford an older one.
Well, sure
But the difference in price usually isn't *_that_* much
